Philadelphia Zoo – Rare Animal Conservation Center
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Rare Animal Conservation Center (RACC) building hosts a wide variety of unique endangered animals from bats to monkeys. Thousands of zoo-goers travel through this building everyday to see these animals in their replicated habitat tanks. The tanks and signage were lighted by over a hundred Halogen MR16 track lights, and the building sustainability committee felt the need to upgrade the lighting to better illuminate their recent renovations, and to keep moving towards their energy sustainability goals. The solution was to replace the current system with LED MR16 track lighting that will not only decrease their energy costs by over $3,500 per year, but will also save them over 60% in lamp replacement costs and 94% in maintenance. This cost savings can be obtained because LED technology lasts 20 times longer than the existing fixtures. They are so happy with the result that they are considering also renovating their School House, Primate House, and Historic Solitude Building with similar energy efficient fixtures.
